Before he became a partner at Thursday, Ryan joined Uber as the 3rd employee. As an engineer and lead member of the technical team, he wrote the software behind a number of critical systems that enabled Uber to launch in dozens of global markets. He transitioned to leadership, overseeing teams who built the infrastructure for Uber Eats, as well as the the Observability group.
The observability work led to advances in planet-scale data storage. These proved broadly useful to companies who struggle to cut through noise and rapidly detect, understand and remediate issues before customer impact. The core team left Uber to build a cloud native observability startup. Ryan became the first investor and founding board member of this company, called Chronosphere, which became a tech unicorn last year.
A self-taught software engineer, Ryan has an accounting degree and considers himself a recovered CPA. He is also the owner of SailGP USA, a professional sports team competing on a global sailing circuit described as F1 on the water.
